Main Application Criteria:

Due to the high expectations set by the OEMs in this market segment, defense applications are often among the most technically challenging. The mission-critical nature of such applications means that the semiconductors employed need to offer exceptional reliability characteristics, as well as attaining the most ambitious of performance benchmarks. In many cases they will need to take up minimal board space and not require excessive thermal management. Keeping their power budget as low as possible may also prove essential - in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for example.

Military Systems Keep  Pushing the Performance Envelope

Among the places where access to cutting-edge semiconductor technology continues to be required is radar. As well as conventional mechanically-rotating radar systems, there are now phased array systems too. In these, grids of closely packed together emitters are used for beamforming purposes. This makes it easier to integrate radar systems into aircraft (particularly fighter jets) and other space constrained environments. By using a phased array approach, the chances of the radar signal being intercepted are far lower. Also, as the signal is spread over a range of frequencies, jamming is made much more difficult. Finally, since there are no longer any moving parts involved, the possibility of mechanical failure is eliminated. Each transmitter/receiver element in one of these arrays needs to be accompanied by sophisticated signal conditioning capable of delivering high speed operation.

When it comes to wireless communication and signalling operations, the priorities may be slightly different, but demand for superior performance still remains. This calls for data conversion ICs that offer a wide instantaneous bandwidth so that a broader range of the spectrum can be digitised. Conversely, for electronic counter warfare (in which measures are used to prevent missiles hitting their designated target, for example), ultra-low latency is the primary attribute that the data converter must be able to achieve.

In autonomous weaponry, guidance systems or image recognition, multi-core processor devices will be mandated. Deterministic operation may also be a necessity. A wide range of different interface options is likely to be favourable too, as this will facilitate integration into older legacy systems.

Product Highlights:

Featuring eight e500mc processor cores (each with 128kBytes of L2 cache), the military-grade QorIQ® P4080 can operate at speeds of up to 1.5GHz. This device is highly suited to compute-intensive and I/O intensive application scenarios and has gained widespread traction in both military and avionics applications. Gbit Ethernet, I2C, PCI-Express and RapidIO controllers, plus DMA engines mean it can be interfaced with a broad selection of hardware.

Further ramping up the performance, the QorIQ® T4240 has 12 dual threaded e6500 cores, with four cores being grouped together and sharing a 2MByte L2 cache. This device attains 1.8GHz speeds. Thanks to the three built-in 64-bit DDR3L SDRAM memory controllers, it supports 1866Mtransfers/s operation. The regular expression pattern matching acceleration function has demonstrated itself to be of great value in graphics processing and image recognition tasks. The interface technologies incorporated include SATA, 1/10 Gbit Ethernet, PCI-Express, USB 2.0 and eSPI. An extensive operational temperature range, spanning from -55°C to +125°C, is covered.

Targeted at applications like engine management in military vehicles, the PC5674 offers a mix of strong computation performance, ultra-low latency operation and minimal power budget. DO-254 compliant, this dual-core device is suited to use in aircraft designs too. It relies on a pair of e200z7 cores that are capable of running at 264MHz. 4MBytes of flash memory and 256kBytes of data RAM are incorporated, both of which have error correction code (ECC) functionality. CAN interfacing is included too.

Predominantly intended for mission-critical applications in both the military and commercial aerospace sectors, the T1014 QorIQ® has a single 64-bit e5500 core. Key features include transaction prioritization, bandwidth allocation and congestion management. Complementing this is the T1024 QorIQ® dual-core device. This shares the same functionality as the T1014 and is footprint compatible - being supplied in a 780-ball BGA package measuring 23mm x 23mm.

Possessing four 64-bit e5500 cores, each with their own dedicated 256kByte L2 cache, the Qormino® QT1040 offers industry-leading levels of data path acceleration. This device can reach speeds of 1.4GHz. It has 4GBytes of DDR4 memory resource (with ECC) plus a wide array of I/O options - including USB 2.0, eSPI, I2C, SATA, Gbit Ethernet, PCI-Express, etc. The unit is housed in a 44mm x 26mm package, allowing it to be deployed in confined spaces. Key applications include radar equipment and image recognition systems. Complementing this device is the T1040 QorIQ. This has the same multi-core processing capabilities, but without the DDR memory included.

These devices support 12GSamples/s operation. They experience only 3dB attenuation over a 25GHz output bandwidth, and still witness only relatively small attenuation when at 30GHz. Key features include a programmable anti-sinc filter, direct digital synthesis (DDS) and digital up conversion (DUC) capabilities.

The EV12AQ600 is a quad-channel 12-bit resolution ADC that has the ability to support software defined microwave (SDM), high-speed data acquisition and LiDAR applications. Its built-in cross point switch allows the 6.4GSamples/s sampling speed to be assigned to a single channel or spread across all four of them.

The EV12AS200 single-channel 12-bit resolution ADCs deliver 1.5GSamples/s operation and have very low distortion. With an input bandwidth of 2.3GHz, they can be used for direct sampling in the L-band. Among the various applications where these devices are regularly deployed are wireless communications and radar equipment.

The EV12DS4xx is a family of DACs that support direct sampling up into the K-band, thanks to their 7GHz output bandwidth. They deliver sample rates of up to 8GSamples/s, and provide clean signal generation up to frequencies of 26.5GHz. Offering extremely low latency levels, the EV12DS480 is the latest addition to the family. This 7.5GHz output, 12-bit DAC has selectable multiplexing functionality (with either 4:1 or 2:1 ratios). The device is housed in a 15mm x 15mm package.

The EV12DS130xZP is a 12-bit 3GSamples/s DAC with a 7GHz output bandwidth. As with the EV12DS480 device, the multiplexer ratio can be set to either 4:1 or 2:1. Thanks to the different output modes offered, performance can be optimized in line with the occupied Nyquist zone. Among its main uses are in radar equipment and electronic counter warfare systems.

The EV10AS180A is a single-channel 10-bit ADC with a 1.5GSamples/s sample rate. This device has proved popular in radar equipment and satellite communications systems. The functionality incorporated includes a front-end track-and-hold stage plus an analog quantizer.
